Chinese Herbal Medicine

A complete system of medicine that has developed over many centuries, with formulas written for the individual rather than the diagnosis.

Rather than prescribing the same herbs for everyone with the same symptom or diagnosis, Chinese Medicine looks for the individual pattern underlying a person’s symptoms.

A consultation may therefore explore areas such as sleep, digestion, appetite, energy, temperature, pain, mood and emotional state, alongside other aspects of your health.

Herbal formulas are then created specifically for you and can be modified as your condition changes.

What form do the herbs come in?

Most prescriptions are supplied as concentrated granules or powders that you mix with warm water. [Confirm forms offered by the dispensary.]

Quality and safety

Herbs are supplied by an independent professional dispensary. Please tell me about any medication or supplements you take, so the formula can be checked for interactions.

Adjusted as you change

Follow-up consultations let us review how you are responding and adjust the formula when your needs change.

Questions about herbal medicine

Is it safe with my medication?

Many people take Chinese herbs alongside other medication, but every case needs checking. I will ask about everything you take and, where appropriate, suggest you speak with your GP before starting.

How long until I notice a difference?

This varies from person to person and depends on how long things have been going on. We will review your progress together at each follow-up.

How much do the herbs cost?

Herbs are charged separately from the consultation and paid directly to the dispensary. As a guide, a week of herbs usually costs around [amount]. You will know the cost before anything is ordered.

Alongside, not instead of. Chinese Medicine can be used alongside conventional medical or psychological care, not as a replacement for necessary treatment. If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, contact your GP or local emergency services straight away (999 or 111 in the UK, 112 in Europe).
